Why has no one told me this before? by Dr Julie Smith

Self described as 'everyday tools for ups and downs', this best seller from psychologist Dr Julie Smith is a useful reference guide for those who want help with their anxiety and stress. Dr Julie Smith came to fame through Tik tok where she explains why we feel like we do and gives exercises to cope with those feelings. The book collates that advice into 8 easy to read chapters covering some of the most common aspects of our mental health; motivation, grieving, purpose, fear and stress.

"So this book is not necessarily going to ensure that you live the rest of your days with a smile on your face. It will let you know which tools you can use to make sure that when you do smile, it is because you genuinely feel something. It will describe the the tools you need to keep re-evaluating and finding your direction, returning to healthier habits and self-awareness."

How much you get out of the book will depend on how you respond to this medium, I felt her short videos were easier to remember and therefore act on when stressed. I think most people will find some helpful exercises in there if they follow through on the suggestions, but as in most if not all self-help, the key is to put the work in. If you spend no time doing the exercises or consistently practicing the suggestions then the impact will be small. I do like that everything she suggests has been proven both by experiments and in her own surgery, giving a sense of assurance this is not a fad made up by some 'self-help' guru with no expertise.
